Wikimedia Bugzilla is closed!

Wikimedia has migrated from Bugzilla to Phabricator. Bug reports should be created and updated in Wikimedia Phabricator instead. Please create an account in Phabricator and add your Bugzilla email address to it.
Wikimedia Bugzilla is read-only. If you try to edit or create any bug report in Bugzilla you will be shown an intentional error message.
In order to access the Phabricator task corresponding to a Bugzilla report, just remove "static-" from its URL.
You could still run searches in Bugzilla or access your list of votes but bug reports will obviously not be up-to-date in Bugzilla.

Description lɛʁi לערי ריינהארט 2005-12-17 03:21:22 UTC

Url's in languages using non Latin alphabets are very long. One way to make them
shorter is to use generic namespaces instead of the localized ones.

*feature request*
Please add a variable which can be set in LocalSettings.php and which will
instruct MediaWiki to use generic namespace names inside *all* urls. If the
variable is not set it should default to "use localized namespaces". This It
will neither influence url's from the main namespace nor url's from custom

By adding "aliaces" (with Latin names) for custom namespaces it would be
possible to generate url's with these. Mediawiki Foundation wiki's could benefit
from "aliaces" using the same aliases for the different language variants for
the custom namespaces "Portal:" and "Portal_talk".

- url's will be shortener to reference / to cite
- the url's will be shortener in the status bar
- users are able to identify to which namespace a title belongs

It is a solution for
bug 04272: Hyperlinks of "exotic" titles are awkward to type and understand
for most pages in the
- {{ns:MediaWiki}} and {{ns:MediaWiki}} namespaces
- {{ns:Special}} namespace
- for many titles using Latin characters in the {{ns:User}}, {{ns:User_talk}},
{{ns:Image}}, , {{ns:Image_talk}}
- for "common" redirects used at the {{ns:Project}} and {{ns:Template}}
namespaces "project:Administrators", "template:delete" etc.

I really can't see why you'd actually want to force a foreign language wiki to
use language that their users don't understand when rendering a URL.
Non-speakers can use the standard English forms without problems, and link to
pages using these forms too.

This request is just about url's. It should *not* influence the content or
rendering in any way. Please let it be a decision of these communities to choose
what kind of url's they prefer; the ones with all the %nn or the ones with
generic namespaces.
