Here is an example, from a subpage of [[en:Wikipedia:Sandbox]]:

<div id="contentSub"><span class="subpages">&lt; <a href="/wiki/Wikipedia:Sandbox" 
title="Wikipedia:Sandbox">Wikipedia:Sandbox</a></span></div>

Why do we have both "div" and "span" tags? Why not sent the "div" tag's ID to 
something mroe meaningful (subpagesDiv?)?

The subpage list is one of multiple things which may go into that <div>.
