I think the bug 39342 should be fixed in SMW 1.9.0: using the Type:Date is not really possible in French (and I assume in other languages with special characters too, given the bug nature) since several months cannot be used as values.

In the comments I propose a small fix that I think harmless, it mainly needs an eye more used to the SMW code to confirm it is ok (or not).

I'm not sure it should be a blocker though, if the proposed fix is not enough.

Disagree, this is not new or extremely critical, so not a blocker for 1.9.
