ku is the macro-language code for a number of mutually unintelligible dialects ( http://lmp.ucla.edu/Profile.aspx?LangID=61&menu=004 ). There are two problems associated with its dialects. It can be written with latin or arabic characters depending on the dialect. The "ku" value currently reads "Kurdî" and the appearance of it on interwiki links is problematic as it should be with both scripts. I noticed {{#language:kmr}} not to work along with "sdh" ( http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/sdh ). Could this be implemented? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurmanji Also "ckb" کوردی which reads "Kurdi" in Arabic script should be something like کوردی (سۆرانی) which would be "Kurdi (Sorani)" or just "سۆرانی" which would be "Sorani" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorani "diq" split from ku.wikipedia on 5 January 2007 and "ckb" spit from ku.wikipedia on 14 November 2010.
So, summarizing, you want: * "ku" to be changed from "Kurdî" to "Kurdî / کوردی" * "kmr" and "sdh" to be added to Names.php (and/or CLDR) * "ckb" to be changed from "کوردی" to "کوردی (سۆرانی)" Changing product to MediaWiki since you are talking about changes to Names.php.
Yes, this is the end goal I would like to see. Thank you for extending it to Names.php/Mediawiki Mind that for ckb the Arabic ()'s look a bit messed up on my computer due to rtl issues but this may be because I embedded it in ltr text posting here.
Per IRC, following up: * "ku": should be fine, but I'd like to have the community informed, because of the previous bug 21596 * "kmr": new languages are added via TWN. In case kuwiki would be moved to kmrwiki, it can of course be added to Names.php at that point. * "ckb": is fine, I'd change it but editing RTL is difficult :)

I think any other such future requests (including this one) should perhaps go through LangCom to make sure it isn't problematic. The status quo is problematic particularly for multi-lingual projects such as commons, meta or even wikimania. These wikis typically use the ku language code (reading just "Kurdi") to refer to the kmr dialect of Kurdish. Wikis currently cannot be renamed due to technical reasons so this would be an improvement to all multi-lingual wikis.
