With the change at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Code/MediaWiki/65059 somehow we lost visibility. Can this be displayed somewhere? 

I can't figure out what the current job queue length is at Commons.

It is still present in api: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&meta=siteinfo&siprop=statistics

It is/was a purposeful change. Per the commit summary:

It causes more confusion than it is worth:
* The figures are essentially random, so it does not help to detect problems
* There shouldn't be any problems with default configuration anyway
* The number is still accessible by other means
