Description Happy-melon 2009-04-16 11:54:43 UTC
Of course, it's not practical to *actually* commit our LocalSettings, InitialiseSettings, etc, files to SVN. However, it would still be invaluable to have some kind of diff system to see more clearly when things were changed, who added what, etc. Currently all we have are code comments, which vary greatly in completeness and utility.

The server admin log (http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/Server_admin_log) is already updated entirely by a bot, and it recognises and records when config files are updated. Couldn't that bot also save a copy of the updated file to another page on wikitech.wikimedia.org? That is, could the bot maintain a page, http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/InitialiseSettings.php, to contain the current version of the config file, thereby adding all the associated wiki bells and whistles: history, diffs, etc?? So every time the live config is updated, the bot makes the same changes to the corresponding page on wikitech. Does that make sense?

Assigning to Domas since it says he runs User:More bots on wikitech.
