Description ozicmbzedrj 2008-06-05 12:29:44 UTC
This occurs on multiple Wikimedia projects: when a page is printed (this can be seen through Print Preview) and an URL is too long to fit on one line, rather than the URL continuing on the next line, it is simply cut off, for example see http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Cognitive_Psychology_and_Cognitive_Neuroscience/Present_and_Future_of_Research where in the printed version, you can find the link http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6WMN-4NH7F2K-3&_user=10&_coverDate=04%2F16%2F2007&_rdoc=1&_fmt=&_orig=search&_sort=d&view=c&_acct=C000050221&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=10&md5=3d7f02d9e5864f3bc9b742b2bb798fc1 which is exceptionally long, truncated after 04%2.

If the URL is formatted in columns in footnotes, for example in the Wikipedia article "Apollo 8" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_8) or "Gwoyeu_Romatzyh" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwoyeu_Romatzyh), the URLs ignore formatting and continue across columns. This is likely to be the case for URLs within tables as well.

What *should* happen in both cases is the URL should print out in full, wrapping to the next line if necessary.

I am using Firefox version 2.0.0.14 on Windows XP Service Pack 2. In Internet Explorer 7, the URLs aren't expanded out in print form at all, but that's another issue.

To have the best chance of seeing the bug, you shouldn't use "Shrink to Fit" or similar in your browser.

This is entirely dependent on the browser. Some browsers wrap, some don't.

Note that columns must NEVER be used for references since they are particular susceptible to such wrap problems.
