The Image: pages seem to be organised for librarians and computer scientists, not for ordinary readers. I think the usability of the Image: pages could be improved if the layout was reorganised. I frequently (in fact, almost always) find myself scrolling up and down through screenfuls of junk (copyright information, image file metadata, version history info, etc) looking for the title of the picture and the paragraph of text describing it. I think it's because the caption is sometimes absent, that I keep scrolling down beyond the point where it would appear without realising this. Even the placement of the image, beneath the standard wikipedia title (which in this case is the name of the the image file--usually of no interest to readers), and to the right of the usual wikipedia link pane, is a waste of two large swathes of screen real-estate that could instead be filled with image and caption. I think making a clear spatial separation between page content (the image, its title and caption) and metadata (who uploaded it, how many bits it, shutter speed, licensing, and other dorky details) would make this page more convenient to use, especially for larger images (or smaller screens).
Hi Alan! Sorry that nobody has taken a look at this report yet and given feedback. How do you think the current File page formats are? Do they address your issues? I don't know how they were in 2008, so I'm hesitant to just close this report. The image given in the URL has been deleted, so I'll also update it with an arbitrary image. Thank you.
He has a point worth discussing imho. I believe it belongs to File management though, since this doesn't depend on the skin.
This is a problem with File: and not Image: (As Image is a subset). I'd love it if we could find a volunteer, GSOC student, or OPW intern to rebuild these pages but to be honest this is low priority.

A year later... File: pages still look like before, but we have MediaViewer now, which is meant to provide the default user experience for user willing to consume media. FIXED (if we look at the intent of the bug)? Otherwise, is the Multimedia team planning to improve the UX of the File: pages themselves?

FWIW, nothing seems to have changed since my original bug report except that the "Image:" prefix is now spelled "File:".

Alan - if you go to [[Special:preferences]] And in the beta features section enable "media viewer", does that give you a user experiance more in line with what you expect? I feel like it addresses some of your concerns in comment 0.
Ah. Perhaps it does, but to try it out requires logging in (with different credentials from bugzilla.wikimedia.org). I look forward to playing with this feature when it moves out of beta.

The intent of this (make file pages better) is handled by the Media Viewer, so I'm marking this as fixed.
