Description Filip Maljkovic [Dungodung] 2008-01-09 21:50:51 UTC
Long time has passed since the developer user group has been actively used. Nowadays, users have that group, I guess, for historical reasons and/or because they didn't remove it. Since there will be no use from this user group, I call for its total removal from the software.

In the URL field, I provided a list of wikis that still have users with developer status. Since the list is not that small, the removal of those groups can be performed manually. If people on the tech team agree, I can remove the user groups.

The part for the developers is the following: just(?) remove the developer user group from the default set of user groups/rights/classes.

In December 2007, Brion removed the developer group from everyone who had it on en.wiki (<http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&offset=20071206000000&user=Brion+VIBBER&month=12&limit=7>).

It seems pretty reasonable to retire the group everywhere else.

Isn't the relevant right now covered by the global sysadmin group anyways?

Changed Product to Wikimedia, this group doesn't exist by default in MediaWiki (it's in a comment in DefaultSettings.php).
Comment 4 Filip Maljkovic [Dungodung] 2009-01-10 11:40:08 UTC
I removed all developer rights throughout Wikimedia. The group can now be safely removed.
Comment 5 Brion Vibber 2009-03-05 18:42:17 UTC
Confirmed not currently used on any of our wikis. I've commented it out of InitialiseSettings.php, and it no longer shows up in the group lists in UserRights.
