I think it would increase our security if users had the option to 'upload'/'paste' a private key to their "preferences" menu and verify their identity using a private key. this would be stronger than any average password and hence more secure.

I hope you one of these two "private key"s should be a "public key" instead? :)

Wondering if adding some GPG infrastructure (bug 10453 is about using GPG for mail) would provide some base for this, plus less of reinventing the wheel?
