Description Andrew Dunbar 2007-11-16 07:17:19 UTC
No everybody wants to see etymology, synonyms, related terms etc.

* We need ways to specify which sections are shown by default.
* We need user-preferences so each user can choose which sections to see by default.
* We need ways to show or hide the other sections during a page view.

To clarify a bit, these additional sections besides the definitions like "etymology," "pronunciation," etc. are typically level 3 headers like ===Etymology===. It would be good to have a set of such headers (which are already standardize in the style policies) which can be hidden or shown based on sitewide defaults that can be modified per-user as well (checkboxes in Special:Preferences for them? though preferably unregistered readers could change their settings, too). A user could decide to see only definitions + translation when the default was definitions + etymology, for example.

[As I cannot find any "Wiktionary Tools" codebase somewhere and as this is stuff that needs to happen in MediaWiki, moving it to that Bugzilla product.]

Is this a Wiktionary issue, or an en.WT presentation issue? Could this be managed using container templates class="mw-collapsible mw-collapsed" ?
Comment 5 Andrew Dunbar 2013-06-19 08:56:36 UTC
It was me who initially pushed for a "Wiktionary Tools" category for abstract issues in (the English) Wiktionary so that we could track them on a proper issue tracking system whether they be addressable via custom JavaScript and CSS, templates, external code running on the Toolserver, or by developing our own extensions.

For without our own category we would have fragmented discussions on talk pages and mailing lists and IRC channels, or if on bugzilla, the MediaWiki and Wikipedia guys would think the Wiktionary issues must be about MediaWiki but not see how they fit in.

... Unfortunately none of the other Wiktionary guys working on this stuff were interested in bug trackers )-:
