Related to http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11181 Actually while discussing this idea with Pathoschild something interesting came about. Why not prod the issue a bit further. The code could add a "bot" (variable - so that it can be translated to the local language) to the bots name? Current history line (from fr.wiki) 16:56, 2 September 2007 Ordinateur (Talk | contribs) m (43 bytes) (Robot : répare double redirection) (undo) How it would be: 16:56, 2 September 2007 (Robot)Ordinateur (Talk | contribs) bm (43 bytes) (Robot : répare double redirection) (undo)
This is unnecessary complication. You can just change the bot edit letter phrase to add whatever info you want (maybe without wikitext, but that's a separate request).
I think you mean in the bots edit summary. This request was primarily for interwiki bots. How am I supposed to know the local term for "bot" in 700 wikis? "bot" means nothing to someone who can only read arabic script for example. Furthermore how am I supposed to know if a local community created a bot policy or not? Navigating among tens of thousands of ? to find a spesific page isn't particularly easy. The idea is giving local wikis some control by giving a link to their local page (if they don't have one bot links to meta). Also the idea is to better inform people new to the project.

I really want this to be a standard for all wikis. We are talking about the smallest wikis who barely know how to edit. Maybe I haven't expressed why I think this is necessary. Roan Kattouw can we talk about this on IRC or email as I dont want to use this place like a chat room.

I agree that the bot flag should show up in history as well as in recent changes (which has been done already AFAIK), but a link explaining what bots are could very well be placed in MediaWiki:Boteditletter.
I think you mean use the space in the bot name to store the bot flag. Although interesting idea, it breaks when having a bot with a long enough username. So you would need a schema change anyway.
This feature request is dependent to Bug #11181. I just want a link automatically generated by mediawiki on the individual history lines for bot edits The example I gave above (copied below) is merely an idea the (link) can be moved anywhere. It could even be a part of the edit summary. The idea is making it a standard despite the bots framework. An average new user would not know what a bot is so the link would be most useful for that. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Current history line (from fr.wiki) 16:56, 2 September 2007 Ordinateur (Talk | contribs) m (43 bytes) (Robot : répare double redirection) (undo) How it would be: 16:56, 2 September 2007 (Robot)Ordinateur (Talk | contribs) bm (43 bytes) (Robot : répare double redirection) (undo)
I understand what you mean, but I don't see why we would change the MediaWiki code to support this. A sysop can change the MediaWiki:Boteditletter message and turn the 'b' into something more informative, or the bot in question could be altered to include this information in the edit summary.
*nod* I'm going to go ahead and nix this one; the planned UI display would be a little 'b' next to the 'm' spot for minor edits, which could be customized on a site if desired.

It should link to the meta bot policy page by default. The local community can customize it if they have a local policy. Can MediaWiki:Boteditletter handle links?
