I'm not sure if this is possible, but I think it'd be helpful if when an image link is red (ie. the image has been deleted or never existed) there could be a small button (like the one next to an external link) that when clicked, edits the text so as to remove the dead link.

Better as a Gadget or userscript (and I think things like Twinkle do this also?).
