Description Casey Brown 2007-07-29 01:30:40 UTC
Brought up by a discussion in #wikimedia-commons on Freenode. The renaming of the pictures should become as easy as the renaming of normal pages. That is, we can rename a non-descriptive filename to a more-descriptive one whilst maintaining the file history, the original upload history, and the author (in contributions and log entries).

On commons, wouldn't this cause links from other wikis to break? You'd need to redirect them, but im not sure how image redirects or image-on-commons-redirects would work.

This seems to be a duplicate, but the consensus on IRC was that a bot would fix this, like how [[commons:User:CommonsDelinker]] works now....

retaining the complete file history including the orinigal uploader (author) seems almost mandatory under the licenses, so a fix like this would be a great improvement not only for easy-to-use but from a legal perspective as well
