after making a long edit, clicked show changes, which worked, clicked back, then clicked on  show preview and the original version of article before i'd edited it showed up. couldn't find any way to get to my edited version

Some browsers, when you click a link or go back, delete all the changes you've made to forms.  If you were using Internet Explorer, then as soon as you clicked "show changes" your entry in the current page's form reverted to its default state.  In the future, either 1) use a better browser like Firefox or Opera, or 2) don't click "back", instead click preview on the show changes page (so the sequence would be show changes then preview, instead of show changes then back then preview).

Regardless, we can do absolutely nothing about this.
