Description Johannes Rohr 2007-07-03 07:02:42 UTC
per above discussion, the Choctaw Wikipedia should be closed. Reasons: No content, no community, no activity.
Comment 1 Johannes Rohr 2007-07-03 22:15:19 UTC
Thanks. Could you, however, delete or change the sitenotice? It still says that this wikipedia is a *candidate* for closing. And while you're at it, could you de-sysop me (User:Johannes Rohr) on that wiki?

Finally (sorry, I should have asked this earlier!), is there an automated way of importing the existing minimal content into the incubator wiki at http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/cho without causing too much work for the devs? This procedure was suggested by the langcom.
Comment 2 River Tarnell 2007-07-03 23:55:00 UTC
okay, i removed the sitenotice.

you'd better ask an existing steward to desysop you, i only have that right for technical purposes so i'd rather not use it on other people :)

i'll ask Tim about importing the content into incubator...

Would you please re-open the Choctaw Wikipedia. There are at least two users who want to enhance the Chahta Anumpa Wikipedia. Myself and a user named Chabi. Thanks, ~~~~~

Changed status to REOPENED.

Hi, could you start editing on the incubator? Essentially, as I understand the procedure the Choctaw Wikipedia has now the same status as a new project. I.e. there should be a reasonable set of articles and the most important parts of the interface should be translated, preferable in BetaWiki, before it can be re-opened. Do you think you will be able to do both?

Comment 6 Johannes Rohr 2008-09-03 20:56:15 UTC
To add to my previous comment: I just checked some random pages in http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/cho, resp. http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wp/cho

I cannot see any real articles there. There are substubs, word lists and image-only pages. These would by far not be sufficient for the language subcommittee to approve a project.

I feel that the Choctaw Wikipedia should be reopened only when there is some evidence that there is the capacity to maintain it and to create real content. And localisation of the interface, of course.

They are working on the Incubator (I referred them to here).
But I heard (e.g. from GerardM, I think) that closed wikis do not have the same status as unexisting wikis, that it does not need to follow langcom procedures.

If so, than you need to seek a community decision because the community had also decided to freeze this wiki. It is certainly not a thing which is up to the devs to decide.

Anyway, I strongly feel that you should first create some real content so that it becomes visible that you have the capacity to maintain this project. In my view this also implies localisation of the interface.

As I wrote above, the current project in the incubator lacks any real content.

What is your and your friend´s level of proficiency in Choctaw? Is it your native language?
Comment 9 Rob Ferguson 2008-09-05 20:42:21 UTC
On a scale of 1-10, I would rate myself as a 5 as 10 being the most fluent. I believe Chabi is a beginner. I'll continue to work on the Incubator until we have some substantial content. And try again later, but I was hoping to get the Wikipedia up so that I could translate the main page into the Choctaw language.

This is not the place to discuss a re-opening of the wiki. This needs to be discussed with the responsible team, reachable at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_new_languages
