Created attachment 3686 [details] Footer in google context When I search on Google about Wikipedia's article, I see often in the context : « Wikipedia® is a registered trademark of the Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., a US-registered 501(c)(3) tax-deductible nonprofit charity. » (and not what I search). Yahoo has a solution : add class="robots-nocontent" in the element, and Yahoo will ignore it (cf http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearch/slurp/slurp-14.html & http://www.ysearchblog.com/archives/000444.html ) Can we do that, in Wikimedia's site, or by default in MediaWiki ?
I don't think this is a good idea as there is often useful information in that section and it helps advertise MediaWiki.
Google at least is usually pretty clever about noticing and filtering out boilerplate content. I'm not sure this would be particularly useful, on the whole, although it might occasionally help marginally with the one specific engine that supports it.
Of course, adding a vendor-specific thing isn't much use for other search engines.
Yahoo doesn't seem to have this problem any more; and vendor-specific solutions are not good ideas for problems like this.
