Administrators are no longer shown a page protection message when editing a page that is protected because of cascading protection. ("This page is currently protected from editing because it is transcluded in the following pages, which are protected with the "cascading" option enabled"). This is a recent change in behavior. It also happens that logged out users see the "edit this page" tab for pages protected under cascading protection, rather than "view source", despite the fact that they cannot edit the page. I do not know if this is a change in behavior.
For some reason, applying manual protection to a cascade-protected page causes the the missing cascading protection message (and not the manual protection message) to appear (despite the fact that MediaWiki recently was changed to have the manual protection messages—including the semi-protection message, annoyingly enough—override the cascading protection message).
I can attest that logged in users see the "edit this page" tab as well.
See bug 9401. Gah, I'll add them both then.
Done in r21452.
Based upon the description, that change addresses my parenthetical concern, but it isn't clear from the wording that the actual bug reported by Christopher Hagar has been resolved. I was merely noting that the cascading protection message suddenly began appearing only when manual protection *was* applied (the exact opposite of the expected behavior). But yes, it is a very good idea to display both messages when both apply. This will prevent a great deal of confusion.
