Revised existing translation (there were several errors) comment: I just installed MediaWiki for the first time, and I became aware of the poor status of our Brazilian translation (although it is actually the eighth biggest wikipedia!) I just corrected the existing file in the package. It should be replaced for new one (as of MessagesEn.php) and totally rebuild, but at the same time preserving the translations already made. Thank you.
Created attachment 3146 [details] Portuguese (Brazil) language messages The new version for MessagesPt.php
Now I don't understand. The file you attached is just an old version of portuguese file (MessagesPt.php). The file in the url is copy of Brazilian Portuguese (LanguagePt_br.php) with some changes, of which most of them would have no effect because the messages were not uncommented.
As it was the first time I used "bugzilla" I didn´t know I was going to be able to upload an attachment in the next screen after I post the bug. I was following the instructions in http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_localisation, and it was not mentioned... I decided to use meta.wikimedia itself to "upload" the new file content (exactly the same content of the attachment)... Only after I did it, I informed the URL (I found that URL doing a search in bugzilla) and clicked to post the bug. I will erase it, as it is really horrible. (I should have done it already!) Now, about the attachment: I simply donwloaded WikiMedia yesterday (v. 1.9.1), unzipped it, and it was there (MessagesPt.php)! I simply revised wrong portuguese translations, adjust some vocabulary, and make the translation of some strings that were left in english. And only that. Absolutely nothing more. The comments were already there, and I didn´t change it. Thank you for you comment, which helps to improve the whole thing... I apologize for my inexperience here at bugzilla...
First of all, please provide all updates against the current trunk of the software, from Subversion, rather than a released version. Second, the issue Niklas mentions is that you claim to be updating for Brazilian Portuguese, but edited the wrong language file altogether.
Thank you, guys. I´m sorry. Forgive me. I was a little upset because the file MessagesPt_br.php from the package I downloaded and installed seemed to me a mess. I recognize the effort of our fellow translators - we´re all in a hurry, isn´t it? I just changed the wrong words and was searching "where do I upload this"? It was a little difficult to find... AND, when uploading, I clicked in the wrong file (Pt instead of Pt_br)! Now, with your help, let´s start again. I´ll be learning to do it the right way. I just downloaded file "MessagesPt_br.php" from http://svn.wikimedia.org/svnroot/mediawiki/trunk/phase3/languages/messages/ It says "Revision 19675", and I´ll start working on it. Is it the correct one? There are two questions: 1 - There is a line (#10) which content is: $fallback ='pt'; What does it mean? I think it means that for not-found elements in "pt-br" (Brazil) messages array, the ones in "pt" (Portugal) will be used then. Is it correct? 2 - I took a look in some other languages Message*.php files, and verified that there are a lot more elements in their messages array then the one in the pt-br file. Why? Even though we have a fallback, the differences are many - it is very obvious for us when the text is Pt and not Pt_br (although it is understandable for everybody, which is a good thing). But, we should not be lazy and stay hanging on this inconsistent fallback. Tell me what you think about what I am thinking: 1 - To get MessagesEn.php and MessagesPt.php as references, 2 - Maintain and correct MessagePt_br current translations, 3 - Translate the others, not-translated ones. 4 - Format the whole file "well-formed", as MessageEn.php / MessagePt.php 5 - In fact, the job will be carefully "mix" MessageEn, MessagePt and MessagePt_br, getting all array keys from the first, translations from the second (differences in terms from Portugal and Brazil are many, but I should use them as a basis), and the already done good job from the third. (Obs.: As I work as a webmaster and know some PHP, I feel comfortable with the "strange characters" surrounding the texts.) I hope to be putting the confusion from the begining away, and follow right path with your advice. I´ll wait your comments to know what is ok and what is not. Thanks!
That sounds fine. Small mistakes can be corrected quite easily by the committer before they actually apply the patch.
There is no update yet, marking bug as LATER. Reopen it when there is a patch :)
INVALID as the attached file is not an update per comment 7. Please review and fix any remaining issues on http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special%3ATranslate&task=reviewall&group=core&language=pt-br&limit=2500.
