Currently, if you enter a template (such as {{User:Super Sam/sig}}) into the Nickname field in user preferences, it will be automatically changed into a substitution (such as {{SUBST:User:Super Sam/sig}}). Although this is necessary on large wikis such as Wikipedia, on many smaller wikis, the substitution is not necessary and is sometimes considered an inconvenience. There should probably be a variable that can be set in localsettings.php that can enabled or disable this substitution. There's a probably solution at (http://www.tmbw.net/wiki/index.php/User_talk:CapitalQ#Subst.27d_sigs), but I don't know if it affects anything else. (The code shown on that page now starts at around Line 3724, now 3455.)
Could somebody please tell me why this was marked WONTFIX?

Created attachment 2898 [details] Uses a new variable to determine whether to add SUBST: to templates in nickname Correction of previous attachment, which was wrong file
Bleh. Apologies for all the changes and such, they were a result of me pressing the wrong checkbox and choosing the wrong file. Anyway, I reopened this (as I don't know why it was closed) and I made a patch that hopefully shouldn't affect anything else.
I did some testing with this code, and found out that it never substitutes, even when it should.
Not much point to this; even small sites can benefit from not having to worry that users might cause a large number of, for example, link table updates just by changing their signatures.
