Is it possible to have a username different to the display name ?

I use an external authentication: I use an email address as username, but I
don't want that the email address is displayed in the top right corner. It the
same for pages owners, history...

Does switching on $wgAllowRealNames and setting a real name for each user (pull
it in using the authentication plugin?) have the desired effect?

No response for 9 1/2 months. Closing as WORKSFORME, as Rob noted an adequate mechanism to achieve the purpose.
