Keeping all the old versions of pages really bloats a system.

Mediawiki is popular and used by more and more organizations. In many
situations such as internal websites, there is no need to keep 
all the old versions.

See the maintenance/deleteOldRevisions.php script. That is the extent to which
such behaviour is supported.
