On Wikimedia installs, "<poem>a</poem>b" renders as 

<div class="poem">
<p>a</p>
<p><br></p>
</div>
<p>b</p>

The <p><br></p> is extraneous and should not be present; it adds a lot of extra
space.  I can't reproduce the bug locally, but I'd guess that the way to solve
it would be

-		$ret->getText() .
+		trim($ret->getText(),"\n") .

(against r15814).
