Description vertigosteve 2006-04-11 15:21:01 UTC
Make disambig tags that work like otherlanguages links - listed at the top of
the sidebar.
Serves to standardise disambiguation, where excessive use of toplevel notes
often does not work.
Comment 1 Rob Church 2006-04-11 15:41:09 UTC
Can you provide some more information, such as examples? At the moment, I read
the request, and I'm not entirely sure what you're asking for.

You need to understand that, when posting feature requests, we need sufficient
information to work on, otherwise we can't understand them, and have no choice
but to close them.

Seems that he is requesting a way to add links to disambiguation pages on the
sidebar, since he does not like the current method of linking to such pages at
the top of an article.
Comment 3 Brion Vibber 2006-04-12 07:33:35 UTC
I'm inclined to WONTFIX; seems to me that such links would rarely be seen
or used. If they're put there it's to be visible, so the related subjects
can be found from someone who ends up at the 'obvious' page by a name
search.

He probably thinks of something similar to the CATEGORY name space. Then each of
Article: "Pot (for Cooking)"
Article: "Pot (Coffe or Tea)"
Article: "Pot (to be Smoked)"
Article: "Pot (a Large Vessel)"

could have a Disambig:Pot near its end which links all those together such that:
Page: "Disambig:Pot"
lists them all much the same as Category: pages do,

:Disambig:Pot displays a link to that page,

includes its content inline,

and finally - that is new - a group of links appears in the side bar (unlike Category, but much like Language
Interwike Links) that says something like:
" Other possible meanings of pot:
 Pot (for Cooking)
 Pot (Coffe or Tea)
 Pot (to be Smoked)
 Pot (a Large Vessel)"

Leaving out or geying out the link to the page acually being displayed.
(What if lots of unwieldy long words, or sentences, need to be shown? Can it ruin the layout?)

Wether or not the Disambig: name space would allow text to be placed on its pages as the Category: name space
does, is up to you.

Btw. I think all of this but the side bar placement can easily be had with a Template:
Pot
which
and optional inclusion of {{:Category:Disambiguation of "{}"}} depending on {}, i.e. ShowOrHide,
and an Article: "Pot" #REDIRECT

I'm not proposing this, nor am I against it, just casually passing by and doing some guesswork, so it seems.
:-)

Yes, and any disambiguation would take priority over interlanguage links.

Another solution would be to show otheruses tags (ie. generic disambiguation
notes) as special standard "disambiguation" links in the title bar itself -
floated to the right (or left on RTL wikis). Something like:

FOO____________________(disamgibuation)
wikipedia...

what a daft idea.
