I wonder how a wiki can be functional without this feature: users get contacted

This one is really important - because one cannot be always active on all
projects. It often happened that I saw a note on it.wikipedia only after many
days, since I sometimes do some work there, but not regularly. The same for
commons or meta (well now I am more often at meta, but it can happen that for
some days I cannot visit all pages). It is an option and for many of us it would
be an advantage, in particular for those who contribute to various projects.
