This is an extreme case I created of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CMOS_NAND_Layout.png by uploading a 8-bit pallet version of the image. The actual image is 3,943 bytes, the 'thumbnail' manages to be 41,211 bytes, thats over 10 times the original. The original file size was around 16 KB, and its thumbnail was in excess of 100KB. Might as well send the user the original image and let their browser resize it than use a thumbnail far larger than the original file size. There should be serious consideration to improving the output of the thumbnailer in some manner so a PNG thumbnail isn't 10x or more of its original.
