see: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proposals_for_new_projects#Proposal_for_.24wgSpamRegex_User_Interface_extension This is an extension request for a user interface to manage $wgSpamRegex. The user would be able to select from a list of regex patterns prepared by spam patrol volunteers on the Meta wiki. Up to 10 regex patterns would be selectable. The lowest level regex filter would be most specific/least sensitive and the highest level regex filter would be least specific/most sensitive. By enhancing the program logic for filtering with $wgSpamRegex, the user could use selectable threshholds for unique or non-unique pattern matches. For indepth discussion see the http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proposals_for_new_projects
