Currently the number of media files is handled by a template and has been updated by hand in the past (see http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:NUMBEROFMEDIAFILES&action=history). It would be useful to include a variable for MediaWiki:Sitestatstext that will allow for the number of uploaded files to be shown automatically.

*note* The "Component" of this report / bug / request should be changed. Searching MediaZilla with "Advanced search" using "Variable {{ }}" at "contains all of the words/strings" returns reports about variables with "Component" "General/Unknown", "Page rendering", "Template", "Internationalization" Wherever only one topic is addressed these reports should use the same component or a new component "Variables" or "Predefined variables" or "Magic (words or templates)". {{NUMBEROFIMAGES}} has been around for a while, and there's now a count in Special:Statistics too. Closing as fixed.
