I was hoping to be able to implement the kind of functionality mentioned in the
summary.  Examples would include most blog platforms and this page:
http://bontragerconnection.com/library/hide-reveal-examples/reveal-more-less.shtml

I was unable to get any of the (from what I could find, exclusively) javascript
solutions to work with MediaWiki (more my lack of programming ability than
anything else), but would love to see a similar thing implemented, even if as a
template.

A friend of mine is working on an extension that might interest you. See
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ShowHide_Extension and
http://crash.vikimedija.org/index.php/ShowHide . If I understood correctly, you
want what this extension does.
