Hi-

I've installed everything and got the database up, so everything should be 
working fine.

But it doesn't. Instead of seeing my index page, all I see is a few random 
symbols.

This has to be GZIP because PHPBB had the same problem, which was fixed by 
turning GZIP off.

How do I fix this?

Your hosting provider has apparently configured some sort of intrusive advertising 
inclusions. Turn them off (see php.ini) or a lot of the wiki will not work properly.

See LocalSettings.php to disable the auto-gzipping, but you will have other 
problems.
