Created attachment 11203 [details] ii language showing square due to lack of font.
We don't have fonts for ii.
It also fails with Saurashtra, for which we do have a webfont.
If we want to avoid missing font issue in language list, we need a font with all those glyphs or multiple fonts. Both are not feasible because of the font sizes/numbers to download. But if there is a font with the glyphs required for autonyms alone, we can achieve this. We will need to use font-subsetting in a font like GNU Free Sans to generate such a font. Still getting fontsubsetting tools work with all these scripts and getting the opentype tables correctly exported is a challenge

Tracked as https://mingle.corp.wikimedia.org/projects/internationalization/cards/1865. No guarantees on delivery yet, because it's not planned for development, but I think that in about two months we should have something for this.
From bug 51073 comment 10: --- We're going to develop a font that will be able to display all the autonyms used in ULS, including autonyms used in MediaWiki. This will reduce the number of web fonts that have to be loaded for pages with many interlanguage links, and will also ensure a complete display of the currently used autonyms in ULS. ---
Will this also fix language lists like - [[:Commons:Template:Lang-mp]] - [[:Commons:Template:Language versions]] There not much gained when we don't load the webfonts for the autonyms but for a similar translation template.
This seems very much implemented, there's even a bug reported already (bug 56346). Marking as fixed.
