Currently, Special:Version contains a series of gitweb links, which are virtually useless to 99.9% of people who might happen upon the page. Meanwhile, the release notes are nowhere to be found, even though we have reasonable pages to link to: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.18 http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.19 http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.20/wmf1 http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.20/wmf2 http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.20/wmf3 [...you get the idea...] http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.20/wmf10 We already have a need to make the release notes more discoverable on Wikimedia sites, and this is the perfect place to do it. Furthermore, it makes complete sense for us to also have landing pages for any 1.20alpha, 1.20beta*, etc, redirecting as appropriate to the main page. Reedy has a start on this here: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/16433/
I'd find this very handy.
MediaWiki core now links to [[mw:MediaWiki 1.xx]] for 3rd party users. I also added a new hook called SpecialVersionVersionLink for customizing this URL. For wmf, this now links to [[mw:MediaWiki 1.xx/wmfy]] (customized in CommonSettings). See eg: http://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Version
