This is really to do with the Mediawiki settings I think.
Take a look at an example category, for the sake of argument
The page has two headings; 'Subcategories' and 'Articles in category "$foo"'.
The media files appear after the 'There are $bar articles in this category' text
and thus under the heading 'Articles in category "$foo"'. This is wrong, as
they are not articles!
The media files ought to appear under a third heading called 'Media in category

... and don't forget a counter for the media files :-)
It is badly needed, especially on Commons.

fixed? I see no heading for media files, nor do I see a counter for them. Reopened.

I was JUST about to do that. Here is proof:
I currently run MediaWiki 1.8.2.
Please check your facts before you close a bug.
In particular, when closing a bug as fixed, it's always possible to provide a
revision number/range where the change was introduced.

And what about a counter? Or does that need to be filed separately?
File it separately, please. It's less of a superficial addition.
