Description Mark 2005-09-21 02:42:27 UTC
The nature of inflecting languages (including all Slavic languages) means that
currently, the majority of wikilinks on these Wikipedias are in the format
"Wikipedii" (example taken from the mainpage of the Polish Wikipedia).

This is because in these languages, words change endings. However, unlike
English, rather than adding a suffix (as in Duck -> Ducks), they usually change
the end of the word (as in Encyclopedia -> Encyclopedii).

This means that for the majority of wikilinks on wikis in these languages, the
word must be typed twice.

I think that it would be a major improvement if, rather than
Wikipedii, people could just type ia|ii. The first
field indicates the word root (in this case "Wikiped"), the second indicates the
ending as used in the title of the article (in this case "ia"), and the third
indicates the ending as it should appear in the text (in this case "ii").

Other examples include:

ia|ii would display the same as Encyclopedii.
a|e would display the same as medicíne.
o|e would display the same as
poľnohospodárstve.
a|i would display the same as zemlji.

The benefit of this to Slavic-language Wikipedias would be great, similar to the
benefit of the "donkeys -> donkeys" shortcut to the English
Wikipedia.

I've reopened this bug since it proposes a slightly different solution (the
double-pipe).

Also, I don't think it nessecarily needs to be applied as a transformation (like
~~~~), but rather more like xxs or xxasdfpasiof.
Comment 3 Rowan Collins [IMSoP] 2005-09-24 14:54:11 UTC
Well, both the syntax and whether it should be a pre-save transform or not are
both being actively debated, so it's probably better to keep the discussion in
the one place.
