You have new messages.

- But I don't, no-one has edited the page since I last looked at it.  Clicking on it 
doesn't clear it.

If it helps I was stuck with this problem yesterday when the database was locked.

Have you tried purging the server cache?
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:YourUsername&action=purge
ought to do it. Also, hard refresh (Ctrl/Shift)-click the refresh button, etc.
