The first thing I do when I see the orange (well, at least on the default Monobook skin it's orange) "new messages" box is to bring up my talk page *history* and do a diff between the current version and the last version I remember. It would save me four mouse clicks and some thinking if the MW software did that for me. In addition to simply linking to my talk page from the orange box, a link to a diff between the current version and the version prior to the edit that triggered the orange box could be included (essentially like the collapsed display on "recent changes"). It would also be helpful if the edit summary of the most recent change could be included in the "new messages" box.
