Description Dave Murray 2011-04-29 20:42:53 UTC
After updating to the most recent svn revisions (we have successively tried r87128, 87129, and 87131 today), the Side by Side Preview function no longer works as it previously did. When it is activated, the three tabs (Wikitext, Preview, Changes) display, and editing works fine. Switching to the preview tab results in a brief Loading.. and then displays a blank text box. The Changes tab displays a strikethrough for the entire page - ie. it reflects that all page content is deleted in this edit. However saving any edits works as it should, ie. content is not deleted and intended edits work just fine.

Should add that we are experiencing this behaviour with IE8 and MediaWiki 1.16.2

You shouldn't be using the trunk version of WikiEditor with MediaWiki 1.16.2.

Still, side-by-side preview is probably still broken, even if you do use it with MW trunk or MW 1.17 (which will be released soon). It's not something that has been given much if any attention in the past year or so :(

Thanks Roan - we decided to try the trunk version as the stable branch (r74799) has awful behaviour pasting formatted text from MS Word - it apepars in the edit window with all its formatting rather than as plain text as it should, but if you save the edits it obliterates all the page content except the first line only of what was pasted. I could report a separate bug for this but it seems to have been resolved in the more recent builds.

Guess we'll revert back to the stable branch version as we'd identified workarounds for the bug by pasting from word into notepad, then pasting that plain text into the wiki, or using a Word Add-in to save as MediaWiki format.

Cheers for the information.

The way to fix it is really to just disable a bunch of experimental WikiEditor modules. They're disabled by default in the newer versions. Disable the highlight, toc and templateEditor modules, and you ought to be fine.

No follow up has occurred, the broken modules have since been removed from master and
