Description Tanvir Rahman 2011-03-02 06:17:14 UTC
Please create new mailing list for Bengali Wikimedia projects (particularly for Bengali Wikipedia) with the alias "wikibn-l". We currently have only chapter mailing list named Wikimedia-BD and Wikimedia-IN-WB. Since not all the Bengali community is not equivalent only to Bangladesh or West Bengal, we need a new mailing list dedicated to only Bengali Wikimedia projects despite nationality. Besides, now we are using the IDs of two mailing lists on the Bengali Wikipedia page. It's difficult to users to follow the both lists. So creating a new one which is dedicated to all Bengali projects will be very helpful to follow, and aggregate the whole Bengali Wikimedia projects' related discussions into one. Also, it'll leave those lists with the particular community related discussions. Thanks for understanding.

"WikiX" was the old mailing list name for Wikipedias, now we use "Wikipedia-X". Is that what you're looking for? Something for the Bengali language?
Comment 2 Tanvir Rahman 2011-03-03 04:13:21 UTC
Yeah, "Wikipedia-BN" will do. Thanks!
Comment 3 Casey Brown 2011-03-03 21:41:23 UTC
Belayet, we don't already have a Bengali Wikipedia mailing list, do we? I feel like we should have already had one, and you would know if we did. :-)
Comment 4 Tanvir Rahman 2011-03-04 04:38:17 UTC
Sorry, I don't understand you. Firstly, I'm not Belayet, and Belayet didn't post any comment here, so I don't understand why you are talking to him? Secondly, no, we don't have a Bengali Wikipedia mailing list. Wikimedia-BD is a chapter list, and that was crated years ago. Community was very small in that time, and we used Wikimedia-BD as mailing list for all Bengali Wikimedia project. But you see the description title of that list? "Discussion list for Bangladeshi Wikimedians", that's not for Bengali exactly, and now you have Wikimedia-in-WB (discussion list for Wikimedians from West Bengal), that's not exactly for Bengali Wikipedia either. So now, something only for Bengali Wikipedia/Dedicated to Bengali Wikipedia is helpful and logical to keep all Bengali Wikipedia related discussions in one place. Those lists also contains activity updates which aren't related to Bengali Wikipedia. Also as I described above, it's difficult for people to follow both lists. On Wikipedia page, we are currently using the ID of those two lists like "Email list: Wikimedia-BD (Bangladesh), Wikimedia-in-WB (Inida)". That doesn't make sense, because Bengali Wikipedia is not exactly related to Bangladesh or India, rather related to Bengali language, but we have to use that, because we don't have a dedicated list of this project. And I think as the largest Bengali Wikimedia project, it deserves it's own. Thanks for your understanding.

And if you're inquiring to Belayet, if we have a list already or not, that's okay for me. Thanks!

If you'll look at the full change I made, you'll notice that I added him to the CC list of this bug when I asked the question. I don't think you're Belayet, I know you're different people.

I already know that you can't think of one and that I can't remember a general list either. I'm well aware of Wikimedia-BD as I've been on the list for years. However, I thought for some reason that there might be a Google Group or other list that we were missing, hence my question to Belayet.

Again, I'm not doubting that there should be a mailing list for the Bengali language, if I were I would have said that. Try not to get too defensive, I'm just trying to make sure that we don't already have a list somewhere that neither of us remembers. I'm not trying to deny your request.

Unfortunately, I overlooked the email from Bugzilla, so I didn't notice the change you have made first. Okay, take your time and make sure what you want to be sure. And I misunderstood your comment, so sorry about that! :)

:-)

I think I found what I was thinking about: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/bangla_wiki/

It looks like that's pretty much just a copy of Wikimedia-BD-l, and the encoding sucks (something with Yahoo). We'll just have to make sure we notify the subscribers of that list about the new one. Could either Belayet or you do that?

I've created the list "Wikipedia-BN" and have set you as the initial administrator (the password's in your inbox). You should definitely make sure that you add some more administrators, I would suggest people who are already admins or bureaucrats on bnwiki.
Comment 9 Tanvir Rahman 2011-03-06 05:21:25 UTC
I'm familiar with that list as well. I'll contact to the people associated with that list, and will inform about the new one. Also, I'm adding few more admins to the list. Thanks for your help.

Yes, we had this mailing list when we started. But after creating Wikimedia-BD mailing list, we switched to that. So the yahoo groups is not that much active right now.

Thank you for creating the "Wikipedia-BN" mailing list. But I wonder why there is no discussion initiated about new mailing list at Bangla Wikipedia village pump or Wikimedia-BD/Wikimedia-WB before asking it here.

Since I am also a sysop at bn wp. I am interested to be an administrator of this new list.

Thank you for creating the "Wikipedia-BN" mailing list. It will be very helpful for us.
