Per bug 26914 comment 4 by brion.

An interface (perhaps a hook) to define an editor should be created.
Whether or not the core should provide options like the following (or if they should be handled by the extension) could be dicussed:
* wg default editor
* wg available editors = array()
* dropdown menu in preferences if available editors isn't empty

This now requires some additional consideration, in that content models and specialized  editors for specific content exist.
