Description lusterdragon 2005-06-28 21:23:45 UTC
Here's the deal... I'm a registered user on the English Wikipedia. The first problem I had was logging in... when I tried to
login on my registered account, I got the usual message stating that the login had been successful. However, upon the
auto-return to the screen I'd been on before accessing the login page, I didn't appear to be logged in. Now that's not
such a big deal... it's happened before, and USUALLY going to another page fixes the problem. However, the first time I
tried that, it didn't work and I was still logged out. The second time around, I managed to get logged in... but when I tried
to go to another page on the Wikipedia, I got logged out. The same thing happened the third time around: I logged in, and
a few pages later, I've been logged out AGAIN. I'm sure that I'm not the only user with this problem, and that this isn't
limited to the Mac operating system, but since that's what I'm using, that's what I'm submitting the bug as affecting. I've
run across this bug a few times in the past as well, but not happening like this.

I tried again to login one more time after reporting this bug. The same problem occured; I got the message that I had logged in
successfully and I would be redirected to the page I'd left shortly. Once I was redirected back to the page, I wasn't logged in as a registered
user. I'm not sure what's going on, and I'd really like some help fixing this.

If it was a bug, it's fixed now. Perhaps it was just a momentary problem. I can login without any trouble now.
Comment 3 Chuck LeDuc 2005-08-05 03:57:56 UTC
Having this problem as of right now on the English Wikipedia. Clearing cookies
doesn't help (Firefox 1.0.6). Most of my contributions wind up anonymous. Cleduc

I'm guessing this is a database lag problem - each request is being farmed to a
different server, and some of them are recognising your login but others aren't.
Tentatively marking as blocker on bug 1268 to draw attention to this theory from
people who understand such things better...
Comment 5 Chuck LeDuc 2005-08-07 06:12:00 UTC
Problem continues... after logging in, ''usually'' the front page will display
with my login intact, but any subsequent page (watchlist, my contributions,
random page) will lose it. Going back to the main page restores my login, but
pretty much only for that page.

Sessions not related to database, removing dependency.
Comment 7 Chuck LeDuc 2005-08-16 02:39:52 UTC
This was happening at my parents' house, using their DirecWay satellite ISP.
Immediately upon returning from the boondocks to my regular ISP (Rogers), the
problem went away.

So my guess is that it is somehow related to the ISP, possibly because of the
increased latency of the satellite connection.

I can confirm this bug.

I am using Camino Version 2005092404 (1.0a1+).
