Description Ryan Kaldari 2010-11-09 17:59:11 UTC
I think it's high time we kill the "Take me back" link. Surely at this point the people who wanted to switch back to Monobook skin have done so. The meaning of the link isn't very obvious (and will become even less so as time progresses). Plus, it's a bit crazy for us to have that as the very first link on every page.

As an alternate suggestion, we could change the link to point to http://nostalgia.wikipedia.org/wiki/HomePage

This is already planed to be removed this week.

It is?

Yup. The links will probably be disabled tomorrow, and the special page will be taken down a few weeks later (after all pages have been regenerated since links to the special page are on all cached pages.

Is there any concern about this action? Erik, Danese and Phillipe have all been aware and in support of taking these links down after a reasonable time. Given they've been up for a month beyond our original plan to take them down I think we are more likely erroring on the side of leaving them up too long than taking them down too soon.

I don't think there's any concern from anyone. It's kind of frustrating that even some staff aren't aware of these "plans". But that horse is pretty much dead at this point.

Not everyone can always be aware of everything. We certainly always try and keep everyone in the loop, but we also have to balance that with not drowning people in information.

These "plans" took the form of a quick "Can we do this?" "Yeah." "But there's caching." "OK, let's talk to Danese and Erik first, then plan it in." discussion split between late Thursday afternoon and early Friday morning. This bug was filed early Tuesday morning. I'm not very surprised by the fact that folks in the fundraising dept don't know about vague-ish plans we came up with two (business) days ago that don't affect their work.

I have emails dating back 3 months ago which involved Erik, Howie and Phillipe, discussing the plans to take this down in mid-October. Roan was only brought into the loop when we needed to take action.

Done.

Actually not, because of bug 25029, but [[Special:UsabilityInitiativePrefSwitch]] will still be there, won't it?
