Description p858snake 2010-11-09 08:23:38 UTC
It would be handy to record stats and such on downloads via ED.

We could use this to work out what is popular and such for when we "break" something or want to look at changing how something works.

Removing "easy" keyword until someone gives a clear functional definition about this requirement:

- Where do we want to record stats
- What "stats and such" are we talking about (just number of downloads? downloads per version?)
- Do we have to output such stats on a special page? Is there any output design?

> - Where do we want to record stats

I would be guessing a DB of some sort, unless someone wanted to construct some sort of Rube Goldberg machine that etched it into a slab of stone at the foundation offices.

> - What "stats and such" are we talking about (just number of downloads?

It would be up to who ever wanted to implement it, and its probably something that we might want to discuss further with actual extension developers

> - Do we have to output such stats on a special page? Is there any output

I couldn't really care :), I would prefer to make sure we are collecting the data in some form first, Output on wiki can always come later if people want it.

We currently have an access.log on extdist.wmflabs.org which could be analyzed with a script to get download statistics.
