Description Amir E. Aharoni 2010-10-28 08:27:14 UTC
In these recently created projects article name completion doesn't seem to work in the search box:

http://bjn.wikipedia.org
http://koi.wikipedia.org
http://mrj.wikipedia.org
http://fa.wikinews.org

I noticed it because the suggestions in the search box didn't work at all.

Raymond on Wikitech-l said: "It seems the new wikis have to be added to LuceneSearch configuration. The search itself is broken, not the suggestion only."

I've restarted the search indexer and built the search indexes for these wikis.

Could you document this process at http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/Add_a_wiki so future wiki creators know what to do?
Comment 4 Amir E. Aharoni 2010-12-03 20:13:49 UTC
It seems like these new projects have this problem again:

* http://gag.wikipedia.org
* http://li.wikibooks.org
* http://eo.wikinews.org
* http://pfl.wikipedia.org

To be honest, the procedure I use is quite clumsy and involves finding the right among a couple of java processes to kill and such. At some point, maybe during the holidays when I have time, I'll make a script to automatize it and put it on the wiki.

Sorry about this. Until then I'll check back in regular intervals to build indexes of new wikis.

I've now built search indexes for following wikis:
eowikinews
gagwiki
brwikisource
vecwikisource
svwikiversity
tenwiki
pflwiki
liwikibooks

I've CC'ed you onto 16976, when something that depends on that bug is closed, that will be a new wiki created. or you could subscribe to the new projects list as roan pointed out.
Comment 8 Robert Stojnic 2010-12-13 11:00:26 UTC
Thanks guys, I've also subscribed to newprojects mailing list.
Comment 9 Amir E. Aharoni 2011-01-28 14:36:45 UTC
Looks like it happened again in the Rusyn Wikipedia ( http://rue.wikipedia.org/ ). See Bug 25924.
Comment 10 Amir E. Aharoni 2011-01-29 11:03:34 UTC
It's not really resolved, because it will probably happen again if it is not documented in the project creation procedure.
Comment 11 JeLuF 2011-01-29 11:20:50 UTC
Reopened.

Please add the necessary steps to http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/Add_a_wiki

Even if it's complicated, we should have it documented somewhere.
Comment 12 Mark A. Hershberger 2011-02-14 21:21:57 UTC
JeLuF, who should document this?

Robert Stojnic manages search and is the assignee of this bug, so he'd probably be a good person to poke.
Comment 14 Mark A. Hershberger 2011-02-18 22:10:07 UTC
poke, poke
Comment 15 p858snake 2011-04-22 05:00:14 UTC
Re marking this as fixed, The bug issue has been fixed, The matter of documenting it is a subsequent bug (which is now filed as 28657).
Comment 16 Amir E. Aharoni 2012-04-01 14:54:23 UTC
Reopening.

Searching is still broken in newly created projects, for example:
* http://lez.wikipedia.org
* http://vep.wikipedia.org

There are probably more.

The procedure for creating a new project must be more robust, so this won't happen. Enabling proper and usable searching is not something that can be forgotten.

There's nothing in the add a wiki information [1] related to search. I guess we should document it and work out if I can do it, or we need to poke Ops to do it

Comment 20 Amir E. Aharoni 2012-04-04 06:20:41 UTC
It's supposed to be the other way. Search is currently not mentioned at http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/Add_a_wiki .
Comment 22 Dhaval 2012-04-29 22:13:51 UTC
Any progress in this related to gu.wikisource??
Comment 23 Sam Reed (reedy) 2012-05-10 22:10:21 UTC
Of all the non private wikis, there are 10 currently not indexed:

bdwikimedia
bewikimedia
guwikisource
htwikisource
ilwikimedia
mrwikisource
napwiki
nsowiki
slwikiversity
wikimania2013wiki

Those wikis should have working search within 48 hours
Comment 25 Sam Reed (reedy) 2012-05-17 02:40:35 UTC
No further reports

They don't. wikimania2013wiki still doesn't have working search.
Comment 27 Amir E. Aharoni 2012-12-15 15:52:46 UTC
Yes, apparently it still doesn't work in wikimania2013wiki.

Isn't there anything that can be done to make search working in all new projects without having to open a bug every time?
Comment 28 Sam Reed (reedy) 2013-02-28 01:05:07 UTC
Looks fine to me
Comment 29 Amir E. Aharoni 2013-02-28 04:47:23 UTC
Not quite.

There are some issues in the recently opened min.wikipedia.org . Search generally seems to work, but autocompletion in the search box doesn't work. Also, searching for "Putin" doesn't find the article "Rusia".

Search works for me, both for proposals and results.

It is now: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Add_a_wiki#Search

Works for me now.

> Also, searching for "Putin" doesn't find the article "Rusia".

That's true, but to me that sounds like a very different bug about the search algorithms themselves, instead of "searching not working in new projects".

All in all, wondering if there is anything left to do in this report.
Right now, I don't see anything so I might close this ticket soon.
Comment 31 Andre Klapper 2013-05-24 14:49:39 UTC
See bug 48715 for latest instances: No search index for newly created el.wikivoyage, vec.wiktionary
Comment 32 Chad H. 2014-02-13 22:05:17 UTC
The process of setting up lsearchd wikis was always always manual and gets forgotten and all *new* wikis should get Cirrus by default now anyway.

This is mostly documented now at that section and the links it follows to. We're keeping the new docs up to date, and have automated most of the index creation in addWiki.php

Marking MOSTLY-FIXED since it's about as fixed as it'll ever be.
