I choose the option "MathML if possible" and purge the cache, but formulas are still rendered as PNG. I tried both Firefox 3.6.11 and Firefox 4 beta, the latter able to render MathML in text/html format.

I don't think all formulas can be converted to mathml. What formula are you trying with?
Comment 2 netheril96 2010-10-26 15:19:06 UTC
No formula works at all. Specifically I tried to read Help:Math which had every kind of math formula, none of which were MathML.

Last time i checked texvc's support for mathml was rather pathetic... and worked with almost nothing.
Comment 4 Bawolff (Brian Wolff) 2010-10-27 01:58:39 UTC
So current mathml support only includes the tags <mn> (math number), <mi> (math identifier. For example variable names), and <mo> (math operator).

Thus very trivial things like y=x+2 work. but almost nothing else works. f(x)=3 does not work for example. y=1.2 does not work.

However this is all on my personal test server. On enwikipedia I can't get any example to work.

I've gone ahead starting with <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Requests_for_comment/Reduce_math_rendering_preferences> -- r104498 disables all math rendering preferences except 'always PNG' and 'leave as tex' since they've never worked well.

Considering this to 'fix' the issue. :)

I've also opened bug 32694 which covers enhancing things to do baseline adjustment, so inline PNGs will fit more naturally into the line.
