Description robin 2010-09-19 13:10:17 UTC
while uploading a PDF to the wiki I get the following message:

======
Error creating thumbnail: **** Warning: An error occurred while reading an XREF table.
**** The file has been damaged. This may have been caused
**** by a problem while converting or transfering the file.
**** Ghostscript will attempt to recover the data.
ESP Ghostscript 815.02: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1

(process:15418): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Unable to create ~/.gnome2 directory: Permission denied

There are a few PDF's uploaded to the wiki already without much trouble, but whenever I try myself I get this error. Any idea?

Just as a note, I tested the pdf file to see if ghostscript just doesn't like it (I've encoutered a few files ghostscript just seems to refuse to read). I can convert it using ghostscript on my computer just fine (also works uploading the file to my wiki fine too), so its not an upstream issue with ghostscript. (of course it could still be that you have a different version of ghostscript then i do)

I have reproduced this bug with ghostscript 8.15. Thumbnails work fine with ghostscript 8.71.

As you can see at http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/ ghostscript 8.15 is 5 years old, so my guess is it doesn't like newer versions of PDF files.

The only remedy to that at this point would be to update your ghostscript installation to newer version.
