I've been noticing the update notification is being displayed even when I'm the only one making edits. 

This shouldn't fire when the new updates are from the current user and are therefore already on the page.

I noticed the same problem at pt.wikibooks.

Tested in https://test2.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Qgil

Edited an existing post, saved and no "This thread has new messages" test appeared. WORKSFORME.
