It would be good if we could setup alternate names or redirects for mailing lists (e.g. wikimediade-l [at] lists.wikimedia.org would "redirect" to vereinde-l [at] lists.wikimedia.org). This would make renaming/standardizing/cleaning-up all the list names possible.
Redirects should work also for mailing lists description (e.g. https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/foundation-l would redirect to https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/foundation ) and archives (e.g. http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l/$1 would redirect to http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/foundation/$1 ) to avoid massive linkrot. This is absolutely necessary, IMHO. This won't avoid header inconsistencies, anyway (e.g. Sender foundation-l-bounces@lists.wikimedia.org -> foundation-bounces@lists.wikimedia.org; To foundation-l@lists.wikimedia.org -> both foundation-l@lists.wikimedia.org and foundation@lists.wikimedia.org ) and hence lots of e-mail filters to be reconfigurated (arguably nothing dramatic).
It's apparently possible, see http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.org.wikimedia.foundation/60385
Meanwhile foundation-l redirects to Wikimedia-l, museum-l redirects to glam and mediawiki-cvs redirects to mediawiki-commits. This for redirecting list info URLs on the webserver: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/4693/1/files/lighttpd/50-mailman.conf This is for forwarding email addresses to other lists: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/4693/1/files/exim/exim4.listserver_aliases.conf
Is it worth keeping this bug open? What Daniel has showed above seems sufficient for us although an in-house function in mailman would be an upstream issue.
Per the above.
