Similar to other page name related "magic words", it would be useful to have one that uses just the filename without the extension, e.g.: For "File:abc.jpg" the magic word "{{FILENAMEWITHOUTEXTENSION}}" would display "abc". Obviously, ".jpg", ".jpeg", ".JPEG", ".JPG" .. would give the same result. People using descriptive filenames could more easily use {{subst:FILENAMEWITHOUTEXTENSION}} as description. Maybe there is a better name for the magic word, but "without ext(ension)" should be easily understood.
Better names for the magic word brought up in a discussion of this request at Commons are: - FILEBASENAME (compare with [[w:filename]], but not [[w:Basename]]) - FILEROOTNAME - FILETITLE (shortest) Discussion is/was at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Magic_word_for_filename_w.2Fo_extension
How complex would this be to do?
