For example, if my user language is zh-xx, and user variant is zh, the links are /zh-xx/something if zh-xx is a valid variant name, or /wiki/something if zh-xx is not a valid name (or is main language code, ie, zh?).

So you want the variant selection to apply to the interface language, as well as to the content language ?

No. I want that variant is variant, and interface language is interface language. Changed summary line to clarify.

Do you mean we should use "uselang=zh-cn" rather than "variant=zh-cn"?

Yes. And omit that if my user language in preferences is zh-cn.

Actually making them in the same way as other links is ok.
