Description Nux 2010-06-17 21:02:22 UTC
On pl.wiki we have a script to dynamically change position for all user (even anonymous). I think this should be incorporated in the vector skin to allow users to get used to this skin more gently.

The scripts are not perfect, but I've tested this on various browsers and it was available as a gadget for few days:
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Vector4monobookies.js
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Vector4monobookies.css

You'll notice that IE6 and IE7 needs to reload the page. This is because this part didn't work:
this.elCSS.parentNode.removeChild(this.elCSS);
If you would find a workaround - that would be great. But I strongly believe we should even add a message for IE6 and IE7 users that they should update their browser as soon as possible.

Anyway, if this would be incorporated in vector I think that the CSS file should be left in the MediaWiki name space so that wikis could customize it (e.g remove/customize logo switch back).

If you would need to change the license just let me know.

Mind telling me what this does?

Search box in left menu looks much, much more better! :-)

On right side it looks like searching in content of page.

I would suggest you set the search box in left as default.

You're saying this script puts the search box back in the left sidebar, while moving the search box away from there to the top right was a deliberate design decision? How do you see this being incorporated in the Vector skin exactly?
Comment 4 Nux 2010-06-19 12:05:58 UTC
The script lets one to quickly switch between layouts without being logged in. You can check this out on pl.wiki (the link is 'Stary układ stron'/'Nowy układ stron'). Of course messages would have to be translated, but you seem to figured out how to translate various messages for JavaScript.

As of 17th we had only one feedback complain and quite weak too and nothing about the search box. So this seems to be working for now :-).

"How do you see this being incorporated in the Vector skin exactly?"

As a quick switch link at the top (as it is on pl.wiki). Or you might want to add this in the Special page informing of the new skin.

This feels like a WONTFIX to me, but letting the interface designer decide.

Scripts are now at:

http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-vector4monobookies.js
